Martinis are cocktails given movie glamour by
James Bond, who famously wanted them “shaken, not stirred”. They are crisp, strong drinks consisting of gin, dry vermouth, and ice with olives soaking in them as garnish.

 A dirty martini is a variation where a tiny dash of olive brine is added to make the drink smoother and less stiff. Olives stuffed with blue cheese make excellent garnishes for this drink, and the gin could be replaced by vodka. 

In my experience, there are only two things that could go wrong with this hearty cocktail: too much shaking and an overkill of olive brine.
