What is a Mai Tai? |
|
Answer:
Say the word Mai Tai and one imagines Ok, maybe that's going a little far,but the cocktail itself is pure South Sea Islands combining a mix of white and dark rum, fresh lime juice, orange curacao, and orgeat syrup. The cocktail is served without ice and garnished with a slice of pineapple, lime peel and mint leaves. I've never had one, but some say it's unforgettable, and a man whose very name is synonymous with tropical islands, Trader Vic Bergeron of Trader Vic's restaurant fame, Oakland, Calif., claimed credit for the creation of the trademark cocktail. The restaurateur invented his version of the Mai Tai in 1944, after serving it to Tahitian friends, one who excitedly proclaimed, “Mai tai roa ae, meaning “out of this world, the best.” Bergeron was the one to bring the drink to Hawaii where its become a staple of the islands. Disputing Bergeron's claim, Don the Beachcomber, also known for his restaurants, laid claim to the drink in 1933 at his newly opened bar in Hollywood. Sources say his recipe is a bit more complicated than Bergeron's. Like many products, don't expect to find genuine versions of the Mai Tai in all restaurants and bars in Hawaii. Look to the finer hotels, bars and restaurants to offer the Mai Tai as it should be. Trackback(0)
