What is a Martini?

Answer:
A martini is a mixed drink favored by some of the most
colorful people of the last century, including Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but best known as the drink of choice of the fictional British spy, James Bond.

Bond always asks for a vodka martini, “shaken, not stirred,” but what he actually receives is a Vesper, not a genuine martini. The classic martini is a combination of gin and dry white vermouth, with anywhere from five to 20 parts gin to one part vermouth, stirred and served “straight up” without ice. Martinis are meant to be cold drinks, but never contain ice and can be served in a prefrozen glass or mixed with ice and strained. Traditional sources say classic martinis are stirred “so the gin is not bruised” or watered down, thus altering the taste. But some aficionados argue shaking a martini rather than stirring evenly distributes the vermouth, giving a more-rounded taste and flavor. Today's bartenders lean towards martinis made with vodka, unless there is a specific request for gin. There is such a myriad of flavors and alcohols used in martinis, now, that anyone can find something pleasing to the palate. Garnishes have moved forward as well, and what used to be a simple olive, onion or lemon peel dressing up the martini glass, has given way to vegetables, fruit peel, pickles and pickled okra, almonds, maraschino cherries and even edible flowers. Sound interesting?
