What is Rum?

Answer:
"Yo, Ho, Ho...and a bottle of Rum",
the old Buccaneers would chant as they became drunk on the high seas between their ugly adventures.  "Avast, ye landlubbers!"

Rum is a distilled beverage ("spirit") made from byproducts of sugarcane, like molasses and cane juice.  Usually, once distilled, Rum is aged in wooden barrels (oak or otherwise).  Rum is produced around the world today, but most still comes from the Carribean area and South America.

Light Rum, made by implementing a shorter distilling period and storing in tanks instead of wooden barrels, is typically used for mixed drinks, as it has a softer flavor than Dark Rum, which is used more for cooking or creating cocktail drinks, because of its stronger, more robust flavor.

During the 1600's, the American Colonists built Rum distilleries in New York and Boston, and Rum production became one of the New World's most prosperous industries in the New England area.

Variations of Rum today include:

Light Rum - light flavor, clear of color
Gold Rum - medium-body, aged in oak barrels, amber colored
Spiced Rum - flavored with additives and spices
Dark Rum - strong flavor, dark color, aged longer
Flavored Rum - flavored with fruits flavorings, coconut, etc.
Overproof Rum - much higher alcohol content than the standard 40%
Premium Rum - very aged, sipping type drink

Please drink responsibly!
