How Do You Make a Cappuccino?

Answer:
In order to make a traditional cappuccino, you
will need an espresso machine and a steamer to create both steamed and foamed milk. The trick to making a proper cappuccino is maintaining the proper ratio of ingredients and creating a good supply of steamed milk.

A cappuccino should be prepared in a ceramic cup, not paper or metal containers.  A five-ounce porcelain cup would be ideal.  The first step would be to brew a shot of espresso, a concentrated form of coffee created by forcing hot water through compacted dark roasted coffee beans.  A 1 1/2 ounce shot of espresso would be a typical amount for a cappuccino.  The finished espresso should be poured into the bottom of the cup.

The next step would be to steam the milk.  This is not an easy thing to do, especially as other drink orders pile up.  Three ounces of cold milk should be added to a stainless steel container and the coffee machine's steam nozzle should be turned on.  The nozzle should be submerged halfway into the cold milk while the steam is generated.  The lower portion of the milk should become properly steamed in approximately one minute or so, while the top portion should become noticeably foamy.

Once the milk has been steamed and foamed, it should be carefully poured over the expresso in the cup.  The idea is to allow the steamed milk to pour out of the stainless steel carafe while the foamed milk remains behind.  Once the steamed milk has been poured, the foamed milk can then be spooned over the top to form a heat-retaining cap.  Additional ingredients such as cinnamon, hazelnut or cocoa powder can then be sprinkled on top of the foam if desired.  For a proper cappuccino, the ratio of espresso, steamed milk and foam should be equal.  Additional steamed milk would turn a cappuccino into the beverage known as a latte.
