What are Rice Krispies treats?

Answer:
Rice Krispies treats are a well-known sweet snack
which has been in the United States since the late 1930s or early 1940s.  A Kellogg Company employee named Mildred Day first made the dessert to raise money for the Campfire Girls, with the recipe being published in 1941.  Since that time, Rice Krispies treats have been a staple of after-school snacks, bake sales, and children’s parties.

Also called “Rice Krispy treats,” Rice Krispies treats are simple, although messy, to make.  They are made with only three ingredients: Rice Krispies cereal (6 cups), butter (3 tablespoons), and mini marshmallows (10 ounces).  The butter is melted, and the marshmallows are added and melted down. Then the cereal is mixed together with the melted marshmallow-butter mixtures until it is evenly coated.  The mixture is then laid out and pressed flat in a rectangular pan which has been greased or lined with waxed or parchment paper.  The Rice Krispies treats are cooled, cut, and eaten.

There are many variations of this simple recipe.  Children and adults alike enjoy experimenting by adding candy, chocolate chips, raisins, other types of cereal, nuts, or almost any other ingredient.  In addition, many people add food coloring or frosting in order to celebrate a particular holiday or occasion.
