What is the most expensive food?

Answer:

It is tough to describe the most expensive food item,

since the unit costs for foods may be measured and sold by the pound or by the serving or by other means.  That said, we can still come pretty close to knowing which foods will break the bank if we must have them!

Saffron, a hand-harvested spice from the crocus sativus flower,  is considered to be the most expensive food item in the world.  Only five to seven pounds of pure saffron are harvested from a full acre of crocus flowers! Each flower produces only three delicate threads or filaments, which must be carefully hand-picked and processed into the  seasoning with the golden price tag.

Saffron sells for $199 for a one-ounce tin, putting it at a whopping $3184 per pound (for 16 one-ounce tins, not that you would buy it that way, though!).

Next in line, and perhaps a bit more appropriately defined as a food, is Beluga Caviar. A one-ounce jar today costs around $150, which puts Beluga Caviar around $2400 per pound.

So, if we make a blend of Saffron and Beluga Caviar, could we sell it for $5584 per pound or $349 per ounce?
Ewwww...somehow, I don't think so!
